Seven accused individuals of Germany's far-left organization stand trial over multiple attacks

Seven individuals accused of being the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network began their trial on this week, facing charges for attacks targeting far-right activists that resulted in the moniker “the hammer group”.

International terror listing and prosecution case

Recently, the US government designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist group together with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors claim the group was behind targeting sites in Germany and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose venue was known as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are said to have using hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several severely injured.

Trial details and international connections

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is expected to run until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in Budapest during early 2023, coinciding with an annual event called the “day of honour” that attracts far-right participants from across Europe.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T., is currently on trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted assault against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the same rally in that year.

Regional context and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has long been a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, responsible for organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M, he is accused of organizing instruction courses where radical left activists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities managed by the suspect, the network allegedly accumulated tools, irritant sprays, disguises and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and international reactions

Another militant formerly involved with the organization, Lina E., became a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the US, freezes any assets they may have within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany applauded the American move and called on the German administration to take similar action. However, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The danger from the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have received convictions or remain detained.”
